Upcoming Running/Biking/Triathlon Events

We've got a few fun events coming up that we are planning on participating in:

Get In Gear 10k - Saturday April 28, 2007 - Minnehaha Park, MN
http://www.getingear10k.com/

This will be the first time for both Erika and I in this - we've each done one 10K before

Minnesota Ironman Bike Ride - Sunday April 29, 2007 - Lakeville, MN

http://www.ironmanbikeride.org/

We did the 62 mile course last year in the rain and I think we are going to do the same as last year.

Buffalo Triathlon - Sunday June 3, 2007 - Buffalo, MN

http://www.tribuff.com/

This will be our first time for us in this as well - if I can talk Erika into it. We haven't done any triathlons before and the swimming part scares both of us. But what the heck..

Grandma's Marathon - Saturday June 16, 2007 - Duluth, MN
http://www.grandmasmarathon.com/
I've done this twice before and swore I'd never do it again, but I got the itch again. Erika is training for her first 1/2 marathon and doing awesome.

What does it mean to subscribe?

I've added a bunch of links on the right to subscribe to thelohns.com or parts of thelohns.com

What does subscribe to a site mean?
Site subscription (sometimes called feeds or RSS) means to be notified when a site is updated so you don't have to manually check it. Almost all major sites now have feeds, especially news sites and blogs.

What is the easiest way to subscribe to just thelohns.com?
The easiest and simplest way to do this is to enter your email address on the right in the box under the tag email. This is from a site called RSSFwd. You will get an email from them with a link verifying that you want to subscribe to "thelohns.com home page". Click on the link and the next email you get from them will be when the content of the main page is updated. It also has unsubscribe options as well, so you won't be locked in. I've subscribed and I haven't got any spam from them. I gotta warn you though once you see the power of this, you will probably spend more time looking for sites with subscriptions and want a feed reader.

Why subscribe?
First you don't have to manually goto each site you want to check for new content. Secondly, it allows you to keep track of a large number of your favorite web sites including news sites or blogs, and not miss any of the content. By subscribing to specific content feeds and aggregating this information in one place you can read updates and news when you're ready.

How do you do this?
You can sign up for a news aggregator or feed readers and look for subscriptions on your favorite sites. I suggest Google Reader. Feed readers start monitoring that feeds you sign up with for updates. You don't have to give any personal information, it doesn't cost a dime, and it's easy to unsubscribe.
Google Reader - Common Questions

Here's some technical information of what RSS is and how it works:

RSS is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication
What is RSS

RSS is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated digital content, such as blogs, news feeds or podcasts.

Easter Eggs

This weekend Abbie, Erika and I colored Easter Eggs. I think the funnest part for Abbie and Erika was watching me attempt to blow the egg's insides out and seeing my face turn red. Here's a photo of our work.

The story of how we got engaged

We went out for sushi to Nami Restraurant in Minneapolis on February 17th to really celebrate Valentine's day. We had a nice dinner on Valentine's day at home and had I had one more glass of wine, I probably would have asked Erika that night - but I wanted to stick with the plan. So we went out for some sushi - I don't even remember if it was very good because I was pretty nervous. In my cool manner, I told Erika it had been a good run being boyfriend and girlfriend (literally, that's what I said) then asked her. She said yes and the waiter saw what had happened and brought us some champagne.

We called our families on the way home and then got up and played broomball the next day. Darci and Chris were up and we ruined their plans of announcing that Darci is pregnant! She let us have our weekend and waited a week to announce that news to the family!

Erika's ring has my Grandma's (My mom's mom) diamond in it. She gave it to me a while back just in case. I asked Connie and Larry's permission over Christmas in Colorado. I didn't have the ring made or a plan of how and when I was going to ask her at that time, so they waited patiently for a month and a half. I found out on the drive home that the permission was only good for two months, so I just made it!

Well said Andy! Now I get to add the feminine touch and my side of the story...

First of all, when we arrived (later than planned, because we had gone cross-country skiing on a frozen lake at a house we were looking at) we were seated in a secluded corner booth that Andy had reserved. Very romantic! The sushi was, indeed, VERY good! I did notice, because I was thinking that the sushi would be the highlight of the night!! After dinner was over, Andy did start commenting on the "good run," which caught me off guard. It was a perfect break-up line!! The next thing I know he is down on his knee with a gorgeous ring! The best way to describe my reaction was similar to the reactions on American Idol when they find out that their going to Hollywood. You know, the crying hysterical happiness we in the audience make fun of. Yep, that was me. The "yes" was definitely an easy answer to his question!!

Andy truly planned the perfect evening!

Oh yes, I thought about playing broomball with no gloves on the next morning, but it was too cold!

Band Practice

As some of you know I'm a backup dancer/manager/tamborine player/spoon player/backup vocals/engineer/inspiring piano player for a band of my college buddies. We had practice on Saturday night. I had this hot idea a month or so ago....What if we take Johnny Cash's Folsom County Blues song and change the lyrics to Ton Loc's Funky Cold Media? It fit's together well and it would be really funny.

The talent assembled in the room that night pulled it off. J.D. is on lead vocals and guitar, Granny is on the drums and Kool and Stig are playing the guitar.

If you have problems playing it or you want the MP3, click here and let me know what you think.
